[SPOILER] Talks About Their Unexpected Demise on Vikings

Find out why it was the character’s time to die:

Siggy (Jessalyn Gilsig) enters Valhalla in Episode 4 (entitled Scarred) Season 3 of History Channel's Vikings

After Episode 4 (entitled Scarred) of History Channel’s Vikings aired for the first time in the US, we had a dramatic spike in activity on this website! Everyone wanted to know more about the unexpected death of long time character, Siggy (Jessalyn Gilsig).

Siggy started off in an enviable position at the start of Season 1 of Vikings. She was the wife of an earl and was living a comfortable life. But, oh, how the gods would ruin that for her! By Season 3 of Vikings, she had lost everything, her husband, her family, her upstanding position within Kattegat.

But Siggy was always a resilient character. She managed to claw her way back into a position of favour among King Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) family. Fate, however, gave another cruel blow to poor Siggy this week. And there was no way she could wriggle her way out of this event.

After following Ragnar’s sons out into the cold landscape, Siggy, without any qualms over her own person safety, dives right into freezing water to rescue them when they fall through thin ice, losing her own life in the process.

Many fans were a bit confused (myself included) as to why this death occurred. For all that Siggy had been through, it just didn’t seem like her time to die. However, Jessalyn Gilsig has given a statement to EW about her character’s demise:

I went to Michael. At the end of season 2 I had some family issues, and living overseas in Ireland just wasn’t conducive to me feeling like I could do what I needed to do on behalf of my family. We’re over there for at least six months at a time—and I think, going forward, they might be there for almost a year. So I could see this was going to become really difficult. So I approached Michael, who’s an incredibly compassionate man, and he was absolutely marvelous and understanding. He was disappointed, which was flattering to me, but he understood.

We talked about how he said that we wanted to resolve the character. So he came up with this storyline, and I thought it was so poetic, so beautiful, and showed you who Siggy really was.

  1. when the elder said there was no one to help her I knew she would be going. But what an exceptionally brave way to show who she was, the camera shots of her beautiful face were so lovely, rest well Siggy.

    1. You’re absolutely right, the camera shots were fantastic, it felt like the opening credits.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I realise her death was perfectly in line with what Siggy would do. For all the ways we saw her as an ex leader, she was more a mother than anything else. I think my discomfort was more to do with the fact I wasn’t prepared to see her go yet 😦
