SEASON PREMIERE: Vikings Season 3 Recap – Episode 1: Mercenary

MERCENARY

Prepare for battle in Episode 1 (entitled Mercenary) Season 3 of History Channel's Vikings

Welcome to my very first recap of History Channel’s Vikings! Want to catch up on Season 1 and 2 of the show before you find out what went down in Season 3 Episode 1 (entitled Mercenary)? Then you need to check out the video below:

Okay, now you know what to expect, let’s jump right in shall we?

We find Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) with his newly appointed (but not like he suggested plot point rich) haircut chatting to his son, Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) about being a reluctant king, wielding power and all those things that vikings talk about in the midst of winter when there is nothing else much to do.

Others, however, are getting itchy feet. Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) is just plain going batshit crazy with all the happy around him, so his new wife, Helga (Maude Hirst) is happy to send him a-raiding! Other vikings have gotten themselves between a rock and a hard place by placing too many buns in the oven and are happy to get away from their warring womenfolk. And then there is Rollo (Clive Standen) who is messed up personified and perpetually ready to meet Valhalla.

So off to England they go because King Ecbert (Linus Roache) promised them farmable land – but wait, what’s that catch? Ragnar is needed to fight against warring kings and queens? It seems the rambunctious Princess Kwenthrith of Mercia (Amy Bailey) is having a spat with her brother and uncle over lands. Is it just me, or is this the English equivalent of what went down between King Horik (Donal Logue) and Jarl Borg (Thorbjørn Harr) all over again?

Anyhow, vikings live and die honorably by the sword, so they all agree to settle this spat and the scene is set for an epic battle.

Travis Fimmel stars as Ragnar Lothbrok in Episode 1 (entitled Mercenary) Season 3 of History Channel's Vikings

And epic it is.

It seems the English came up with this brilliantly dumb idea to set up on two adjoining (but completely unattached) patches of land. The plan was to attach Ragnar’s group from both sides – I think. But in all their smugness, they forgot the one gaping flaw: If Ragnar attached one side, there was no way for the other mob to come round and help. So Ragnar (with the help of Floki lopping of a royal head) totally brings down the smaller group IN FRONT OF THE OTHERS and succeeds in completely scaring the shit out of the remaining English party.

And that’s how vikings get shit done!

Now let’s go back and have a look at what else was going on in Episode 1.

RELATIONSHIPS

Will Lagertha find love in Season 3 of History Channel's Vikings (Episode 1, entitled Mercenary)

  • It seems likely that King Ecbert and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) will get their jiggy on this season since the king appeared captivated by the shield maiden from the very onset.
  • Bjorn and Þórunn (Gaia Weiss) will not have a straight run to the altar. Þórunn is determined never to be controlled by a man again as she journeys from slave to shield maiden. Bjorn is pigheaded and not at all like his father when it comes to letting the women he loves fight. Pretty sure Ragnar is going to have words about how Bjorn was more interested in protecting his girl during battle than fighting alongside everyone.
  • If you have read into the sagas of Ragnar, you will know that Ragnar has three wives. And it seems Season 3 might also herald in the arrival of wife #3 with Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) getting cranky at the sight of Ragnar going off to England with his first wife, Lagertha, in tow. If that isn’t enough, Princess Kwenthrith, the ever horny, seems determined to get a viking earl into her bed. Wouldn’t it be interesting if Ragnar returned with a pregnant English princess in tow?

DECEPTION

Lagertha’s second in charge, Kalf (Ben Robson) who we totally haven’t heard much about until just now, appears to be lining up to double cross in Season 3. He might now want Ragnar to find this out…

Vikings Season 3: Bjorn Understands He is Not Ready to Lead

Alexander Ludwig explains Bjorn’s role in Season 3 of Vikings:

Alexander Ludwig stars as Bjorn in History Channels Vikings

Alexander Ludwig might have found it tough joining an established cast and taking over the mature role of Ragnar’s son, Bjorn (previously played by child actor Nathan O’Toole) – but, luckily, the cast welcomed him with open arms. But how will Bjorn fare in Season 3 of History Channel’s Vikings? Alexander had this to say:

In season three he’s his own man. He’s a team with his father and he’s basically learning to lead, because historically that’s what will happen – Bjorn will have to step up and take over … He’s intelligent and so he wants to learn everything he can from his father because he sees that he is a visionary. But at the same time he does want to do better, and he wants to go further. He wants to become even more legendary, and historically that is what happened.

While there is much for Bjorn to learn before he can follow in Ragnar’s (played by Travis Fimmel) footsteps, something he has started to master now is how to fight:

You are definitely going to see that the tables have turned greatly, and he has learnt, he has picked it up, and he’s smart. He is very intelligent and an old sort for how young he is. He understands that he is not ready to lead, but he is going to do everything he can right now to learn so that when he does he have to step up in the near future he’ll be ready to do so.

These scenes are incredibly strenuous as well, considering Vikings is shot on a small budget:

In terms of the fight sequences, that is just so much fun. It’s also super strenuous because we don’t have any crazy special effects. Everything we do is real and gritty, and I think what people really respect about the show is that we do stay really true. I love that it’s so raw, and when we are filming it you are basically in a fight. There are times where you’ll just pull somebody left to you, throw them to the ground and get in a fight that wasn’t planned at all, and it’s kind of fun to be able to do that.

Is Athelstan Safe in Season 3 of Vikings?

A fan favourite will die in the History Channel’s Vikings:

George Blagden stars as Athelstan in History Channel's VikingsAccording to several quotes by cast at the History Channel’s Vikings panel during this year’s San Diego Comic Con, it seems we will lose a favourite character in Season 3. Many people have speculated that it will be Athelstan who will die due to the fact that the actor who portrays him, George Blagden, has taken on a major role of Louis XIV in the new TV series Versailles.

But is this really just smoke and mirrors? Let’s have a look at what George has to say on Twitter and Instagram.

Four months ago George returned to work on the set of Vikings:

Two months later, we find this image of George and Travis Fimmel (who plays Ragnar Lothbrok). Both are in costume and appear to be on set:

After that, there isn’t a lot to report on his role in Vikings, but plenty of images of George on set for Versailles. However, in the last few weeks, there has been a flurry of new tweets and photos regarding Vikings again, starting with a tweet assuring fans we will get to see Athelstan in Season 3 – but for how long, many fans have questioned?

Finally, we finish up with this image on Instagram:

While it seems the return to Vikings costume may only be for photo stills and promotional pictures, there is the suggestion also that perhaps Athelstan is absent for the middle of the season and then returns at the end.

It is entirely possible Athelstan will die in Season 3 of Vikings, however, I still wonder if maybe this is the perfect example of ‘running with a fan rumour’ to cover up the real death. But who else could die? Historically we know that Bjorn (played by Alexander Ludwig in the TV series) becomes a bigger ruler than his father. Is it time for Ragnar to die?

Who Will Die in Season 3 of Vikings?

Fans Are Warned A Favourite Character Will Die:

Season 2 Vikings promo pic 6

In History Channel’s Vikings fans expect death and violence. However, at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, the actor who plays the viking Rollo (Clive Standen) announced it was all over for a cast member recently on set for Season 3:

We just lost one of our favorite people.

Alexander Ludwig (who plays Bjorn) followed up with:

Someone’s going to die.

While there was no confirmation that it is definitely a main character who is going to die in Season 3 of Vikings, Standen’s suggestion it was one of the cast’s favourite people indicates it was someone fairly well known to them. But who could it be?

There have been many rumours that Athelstan (played by George Blagden) will die. However, so far, there has been no substantiated quote from any member of the cast or crew that suggests this is true. Although, the fact that George has taken on the role of Louis XIV in the new TV series Versailles, has gotten plenty of fans worried that this may mean he has left Vikings.

Considering the History Channel and Vikings writer Michael Hirst both pride themselves on programs that are based largely on actual historical facts, it is unlikely that Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) son Bjorn will die in Season 3 either since, historically, he supersedes his father.

This still leaves plenty of room for other characters to die though. Who do you think it will be? Let us know your predictions by commenting below!
